Lot

The Lot is steeped in Anglo-French history with Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Henry Plantagenet through to the Hundred's Year War, being once part of the English provence of Aquitaine. From pre-historic cave paintings to the sights of Rocamador set on the dramatic limestone cliffs of the 'causse' and the stunning sights of the upper Dordogne valley, then south to the valley of the river Lot and the medieval city of Cahors with its vineyards producing the famous 'black wine'. At every turn there is a breathtaking vista - the region is called Quercy with its unique architectural pigeonniers. Well known for its walnuts, truffles and cuisine de canard. Where the pace of life has not changed for centuries.

Ideally situated just 3 hours from the mediteranean coast, the Pyrennes and the Atlantic coast and only an hour from the ski slopes of the Auvergne.

The climate is pre-dominately dry with a lower humidity than many other parts of France but it still retains a marked change of seasons.

Cahors Gourdon & Martel

Cahors: is the administrative and cultural centre for the Lot.

Gourdon: is an old Bastide town on the edge of the pays de Bouraine which melts gently into the valley of the Dordogne.

Martel: a 'cité medieval' where Richard I's brother died after ransacking the shrine at ROCAMADOR.
