The Pyrénées-Atlantiques

Like the Gironde, the Pyrénnées-Atlantiques (Department 64) is part of Aquitaine but its proximity to Spain and the influence of Gascon and Basque culture and language make it very distinctive. The climate is temperate thanks to the Atlantic coastline. The area offers walks in the glorious parks and treks in the hills, wine tasting, museums and opera houses. The beaches on the Basque coast feature numerous spectator sports and white water activities.
Salies de Bearn, where Bordeaux and Beyond is based, is situated in the heart of the Bearn region, between Pau and Biarritz. It is a typical Bearn town of winding lanes, flower-decked houses and brightly painted woodwork. With the river Saleys flowing through the centre of the town, it is considered to be the Venice of Bearn. Also known for it's natural salt water source, Salies boasts a fantastic spa and fitness centre. Many of it's neighbouring villages, in particular, Sauveterre de Bearn, provide stunning panoramic views of the Pyrennées.
